Spring has Finally Arrived

Spring is finally here.

How do I know?  The Lilacs are in bloom.

If you want a quick and easy centerpiece that smells up the whole room when you walk in, then just pick some fresh Lilacs and let the freshness begin.

Here is a simple floral arrangement that anybody can do.  You can use lilacs, roses, rhododendrons or almost any flower you can find.  Don’t buy these beauties if you have some flowering bushes in your yard. Just go out and cut a few stems.

Usually you see a lot of these bouquets in a tall vase.  See what I used and then I  placed it on the table to use as a centerpiece.

I used a soup tureen.  You also need floral foam.  The kind that you soak in water.  When stems of flowers are stuck into this foam, it acts like a self watering system for the flowers.

I placed the foam into a plastic container before putting into my tureen. Next I placed a tall stem of flowers directly into the middle of the foam.  Then I stuck a stem on all four sides toward the outer edge of my tureen.  After you do this, then just start filling in the empty spaces and before you know it, you have a centerpiece that looks like a Florist did it.  Make sure to leave a few leaves sticking out.  It gives it a really natural look.

Try giving this to Mom for Mother’s Day.  She will love it (and she won’t even have to know that it cost you virtually nothing, and it was her Tureen to begin with)

Easter Cake

Peeps Peeping out

Want an easy cake for Easter, but you don’t want a lot of hassle?  Lets face it, next to Christmas and Thanksgiving, Easter comes in third as the next biggest Holiday.  Everyone is having a big dinner with family and friends and if there are little ones…..well there really needs to be the big Easter Egg hunt.

I decided to throw this cake together (yes, I do mean throw).  I had bought some cake mixes and prepared icing at Christmas time on sale (I checked the expiration dates)

Well, with everything else going on at Christmas, I did not get a chance to use the cake mixes and icing, so here is my chance to use them now.

Just remember, check after holidays for seasonal items on sale, even food.  Always make sure to check the expiration dates on these items before buying.  Prepared foods usually have a long shelf life, long after the holiday it is originally meant for.  Candies, chocolates and nuts can be frozen to last longer and then use these items throughout the year to make favorite desserts

I bought 5 packages of Peeps for $1.00 each and used the cake mixes and icing I already had on hand.  The suckers on top was $1.00 for six.  The coconut was what I had frozen after Christmas.

Directions:

  • Oil and flour 3 cake pans
  • Bake cake mixes as directed on box (I used 2 white cake mixes)
  • Separate the cake mix evenly into the 3 cake pans
  • Bake as directed, cool completely
  • Frost all 3 layers with icing
  • Place Bunny Peeps in the icing around the cake
  • Place coconut in zip lock bag and place about 3 drops of food coloring in, seal and shake until coated.
  • Sprinkle coconut on top and sides of cake
  • Place suckers in top of cake and serve

This cake will serve about 20 people.  It is a quick, easy and fun dessert that can be made the day before. Put it on a cake server and place on the table for a fun and festive centerpiece for Easter

Easter Deviled Eggs

Color Deviled Eggs

How cute is this……

I was thinking the other day, if I could make colored eggs for Easter, then why not make colored devil eggs.  There are 2 ways of doing this.

You can either hard boil your eggs and then dip them in food coloring, (use for decoration or Easter egg hunting, remember to only allow a short period of time out of refrigerator, then peel and follow directions below)  or hard boil your eggs, peel and then dip.  I chose to boil, peel and then dip

I boiled the eggs and them peeled them, cut them in half, took out the yolk and then I dipped them

I left them in the colored water for about 5 minutes.  The longer you leave them the darker the color.  The eggs absorb the color very quickly, so depending on how dark you want them is how long you leave them in the water.

I used coffee cups and filled with about 8 oz of water.   Add about 1 tsp of white vinegar and about 5 drops of food color to each cup.  Again this depends on how concentrated you want the color.  If you want pastel colors, then only add about 2 drops of food color and limit the time the eggs are in the water

Recipe for Deviled Egg filling:

12 hard-cooked eggs

1/4 cup MIRACLE WHIP Dressing

1/4 cup GREY POUPON Dijon Mustard

1/4 tsp. sugar

Paprika

Cut eggs lengthwise in half.  Remove yolks; place in small bowl. Add dressing and mustard; mix well.  Add mixture to a quart zip lock bag and seal.  Cut one corner off bag and pipe into egg  halves; sprinkle with paprika.

Serve immediately.  Or, cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.

Valentine’s Day

Print Friendly

You are never too old to celebrate Valentines Day

My Daughter is 16 now.  Long gone are the days of helping her make a Valentines Box to take to school and helping her pick out just the right Valentine to give to her classmates and Teacher.

I really do miss those days.  Its not until you get older, does one think how they could have cherished by gone days with those they love.

When you think of giving Valentines, you either think little kids or Hubby, Soul Mate, Better Half, Partner ect.  What happens to the teenagers that are between these 2 generations?  They would still like to get something for Valentines Day, and not just from their girlfriend or boyfriend.

I know when I suggested these for my daugther to give to her friends, she fell in love with the idea and helped me make them. It brought back some memories of when she was little, and a smile to both our faces.  Isn’t that what really counts!

Now, you can make and give these to anyone you like.  I just thought they made excellent Valentines for her age group.

I just went to the Dollar Store and bought some items and got creative with the sayings on these.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The S’Mores were made with Graham Crackers and these sweet little heart shaped marshmellows

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

These Dynamite sticks were made with M&M’s and some red construction paper and a piece of black pipe cleaner.  Any type of rolled candy will do

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Found these suckers at Wally world.  They were 10 for $1.00

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

And of course you can find the Pop Rocks and M&M’s almost anywhere

When giving anything that has nuts in it, just make sure that whoever you are giving it to is not allergic.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I just went on the computer to my Printmaster program and printed out these messages and used scrapbbok paper for the background.  Did not have to use my color ink for the background.

I am sure that all her friends will love getting these for Valentines Day.
